Change Your Input To Change Your Output
Change Your Input to Change Your Output - by Jeri Goldstein

Did you ever notice that when you change your input you change your output?

The kinds of stimulus you surround yourself with each day make a difference in how you function and ultimately what results you achieve.

So many artists I speak with are so focused on their current thing, whether working on their art or working on the business of their art. They never look up, never take a break, never recharge. Does this sound familiar?

Today’s Biz Booster is all about how you recharge. What do you do to reset your switch to benefit your creativity and your business?

Every day, mostly in the early morning, I go to my favorite wetland preserves and walk. Some days I go to Wakodahatchee and other days to Green Cay. I walk from 3-5 miles on a boardwalk loop that winds throughout the wetlands. Right now, there are thousands of birds nesting. I get away from my daily work and life routines and become caught up in the life cycles and interactions of the inhabitants of these amazing natural living spaces. I often think about the Wetlands as Nature’s Time-Share. One species arrives, nests, hatches their young and then they fly off. After a brief time, a whole new set of migrating birds arrives and begin their nesting rituals.

Each walk brings new action, new events in this completely alternative universe. It both rests my mind and engages it. I’m transformed by their activity and inspired.

Great Blue Heron
One day I might see a

Great Blue Heron

practicing Tai Chi.

Or witness a domestic squabble among a couple of expecting Wood Storks while doing some nest, home decorating.

Listen closely as a Red Wing Blackbird sings his song.

My favorite of all the birds is the Black Bellied Whistling Ducks. They mostly hang out in pairs or groups and are always copying each other’s movements. And, watching parents and their ducklings are just a treat.

The Anhinga often hangs out on the rail, happy to pose for photos.

Whether standing proudly on one foot or wings spread wide to dry after a fishing expedition, or simply doing some vocal warm-ups, the Anhinga is not a shy bird.

But watch out, there are always dangers lurking about.

Alligators and Iguanas are just two of the predators living in the wetlands.

Even they offer inspiration and add to the activities of this natural habitat.

Not only do I get a great dose of amazing, some sunshine, vitamin D and exercise, but it opens my mind to new ideas for my day. I leave my walks feeling refreshed and energized to get to work.

This renewal is imperative to moving your career forward. You don’t need to live near a forest or an ocean or a Wetland Preserve. You might just explore a neighborhood playground or park or an easy walk around the block. No matter where you live or work or tour, do something out of your work routine. Change your surroundings to inspire new ideas. Make this a habit each day to do something that gives you a rest from continually plugging away. Change your input to change your output and see how you feel about the rest of your day and your work.

Whether writing songs, composing music, planning tours or marketing campaigns, step away from the work to take a break. You’ll be amazed by how much more work you get done. You may not even have to wait until you get home, back to your hotel room or back in the touring vehicle. Your muse may strike while your mind is at rest. So, go for it every day. Change your input to change your output. The results are undeniably profound.

How do you renew and recharge your creative engine? What sort of out-of-your-routine things do you do, or places do you visit?

Love these videos Jeri. Great advice and especially cool to get to share the exotic and wonderful creatures that you get to see in Florida. Thanks!

Jeri, your gentle reminder to step away from working ALL the time, and step into nature, and let that nature recharge my batteries, is just what I needed to hear this afternoon. Thank you.

I really enjoyed this glimpse of Mother Nature’s Wonders, thank you! Five mornings a week I walk over to the local yoga studio for a class during which I quiet my mind and allow space for inspiration. I live near a lush park and find respit walking it’s trails in the afternoon as well. A creek flows through. Birds sing. No alligators tho’.
