Take Your Career To The Next Level - by Jeri Goldstein

Every artist I speak with refers to the phrase, “I want to take my career to the next level.”

Some are at the dawn of their careers and others smack dab in the middle and still others have been slugging away at it for years. And yet, each are searching for the next level.

Well I’m all for striving for success. And in order to “take it to the next level,” I believe you have to understand where you are right now and what it actually means to go to the next level. Most artists want to go from playing for six people at an open mic to playing stadiums. That is not the next level or anything near the next level.

In order to know what your next level might be, let’s start with an assessment of where you are now. Once you understand that, you can incrementally make plans to move to the next logical level.

Let’s say that right now you can sell out a house concert of 30 people and can also sell 50 seats at a local venue on a consistent basis in your home town area. The next level might be selling 100 seats in a more prestigious venue every two months. Then you might do two nights at this venue and sell 200 seats. If you can’t sell the two hundred seats then you have more work to do in order to strategically get to that next level.

In my book, taking your career to the next level is by design, making incremental steps up from where you are right now, the number of seats you can sell right now and then stepping up slightly to build upon the groundwork you’ve previously laid.

It all starts with your assessment of your current situation. That ought to be step one this month to get you ready for your next- level moves during next year. Set these incremental goals for yourself and by the end of next year, you will absolutely have taken your career to your logical next level.

Use this template with every goal you have or with every type of performance situation you want to play and you will reach those desired next levels more quickly.

So what have you done recently to take your career to the next level?

    Hi Jeri,
The thing here in Sedona is that 99 percent of the venues (bars & wine joints) do not sell tickets.
There is never a cover. There is not any precise way to figure how many folks will be at a show.
Which makes it difficult to judge where the next level might be. I have been able to stir excitement
at my shows because of my energetic performances and song writing but then when the show is over, it’s over, until the next one when the process has to begin all over again. I guess I’m saying the whole picture is frustrating. So what else is new?! Anyway I felt like throwing this over to you. Have a great Holiday!!!
