It’s time to focus on your challenges and do something about them.
I’m often asked, “How do I decide what are the most important things to focus on with so many things needing to get done?” Let’s face it, building a successful career has many moving parts and each one needs your attention at some time. But, do you have to take them all on at once? I think not.
This week, let’s focus on your challenges. Let’s identify some of your greatest challenges and make a few lists. That way you can identify some of the most important challenges and concentrate on working through those one at a time.
Yes, I said one at a time. Once you identify your challenges, pick the biggest one that is keeping you from moving forward. Work on that one first. It may take a short time, it may take months, but if you are able to see that as a challenge that is holding you back, preventing you from succeeding in any way, then that’s the one you need to pay attention to with laser-like, un-distracted focus.
Here are some of the challenges that might be hindering your success. See if any of these sound familiar to you.
Focus On Your Challenges:
- Inability to prioritize
- Don’t like making calls to book gigs
- Multi-tasking—Jumping from one activity to another and never really completing anything
- Fear of asking for money when booking gigs
- Pricing yourself too low
- Afraid to look for or ask for help
- Scatter your bookings over too broad an area so you never really build a concentrated following
- Unable to get return bookings
- Too many details to take care of, so you let important ones slip
- Have trouble keeping good records
- Haven’t built a loyal fan base yet
I think you get the idea that any single item on your list can create large problems for your success. It’s time to clarify your list of challenges and work on them. Any one of the above items could drastically hold you back.
This week, take an hour for yourself and make your list of challenges. Just have a brainstorming session with yourself. Once you have the list, then put them in order of the most hindering to least and work on that big one first.
Think about all the ways in which it is holding you back and list them. Then take each one and come up with creative ways that can help you address each of them. If it means asking for some kind of help, great! If it means changing the way in which you do some activity, fine. You can’t make a change until you identify the problem, think of solutions and then take action.
Success is not only about push, push, pushing. Sometimes you just have to take a moment and reflect on what’s working, what’s holding you back, and what you can do about it.
So this week is all about focusing on your challenges. Take all the time you need, you’ll be better off tomorrow.
