How do you avoid unnecessary touring challenges? We've all heard touring horror stories. As an agent, I've experienced my share with my acts. You must have had your share of challenges over the years as well. You know the kind I'm talking about. There are the travel mishaps like luggage, including instruments not arriving with you on your flight. Or how about the broken instrument discovery after a long flight, always a wonderful surprise. Then there is the cancelled flight or the traffic jam. Occasionally there might be the odd food poisoning right before your show or catching the flu on the plane on the way to the show. How…

How many benefits have you been asked to play? And how many of those did you get paid for? Work with me here, because playing a benefit and getting paid to play that benefit does not have to be a mutually exclusive occurrence. I want you to be among those artists who help raise money for your favorite cause AND also get paid for your time and talent. BUT, you have to know how to approach each situation. You have to know the 7 questions to ask during that very first conversation when they ask you to participate. That initial phone call determines everything else, especially whether or not you get paid. So that's why I included Module 6 in the How to Book…
It's time to conquer your empty calendar syndrome! Here it is November. As you look at your calendar for the new year, January February, March and even into the summer months, are you relieved to see tons of booked gigs filling dates far into your future? OR are you shocked to see week after week with no gigs staring back at you, better known in my world as the “Empty Calendar Syndrome.” As a booking agent, I dreaded seeing empty calendars and struggled to get those tours booked far enough in advance, so I never had to deal with “empty calendar syndrome.” That prompted me to come up with a…
Do you give back by gigging during the holiday season? As today is Veteran’s Day, this Biz Booster may be particularly poignant. We all get more concerned with making donations around the holiday season, and that’s a good thing. I encourage you to give back by gigging to help community organizations with their fundraising. You can check out my article linked here in this biz booster, How You Can "Give Back" by Giving Your Music The article details ways that you can put your music to work for a cause. And please note that my strategies about playing benefits do not include playing for free, but that's another discussion, one…
Open new markets with audience swaps to help build fans and offset expenses. You want to open new markets but are tired of coming home with empty pockets or worse yet, spending far more than expected. You need to expand your fan base, but it costs so much in expenses to travel away from your home base. Then try to open new markets with audience swaps. First: Find an artist in a new market where you would like to expand. Choose an artist whose work you like and with whom you think you would be compatible. Second: Make sure the artist selected has a strong following in the desired market.…
Are you the act they remember and want to book again? It's not always the show that makes a lasting impression. Sure, you wowed them on stage, they loved you-BUT… The show is only one piece of the puzzle. In order to complete the whole picture, you must also add a few more important pieces—perhaps even more important than the actual show. It starts way back when you booked the gig and how you dealt with the booker. If you did all you could to develop a great relationship from the start, then you are off and running. The next step is all about how you manage the advance process…
